Port de Québec: Rally to Urge a Return to the Bargaining Table

Québec City, January 18, 2018 – The members of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE), a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), are currently rallying at the entrance to the Port de Québec, at the corner of Dalhousie Street and Quai Saint-André in Québec City.

“Our members are standing firm. We are resolved to send the representatives and CEO of the Port de Québec the message that we will do our utmost to preserve and improve members’ working conditions,” says Louis Cannon, Regional Vice-President of UCTE.

On Tuesday, January 16, the Port de Québec gave the Union written notice of its intent to withdraw from the bargaining table. A meeting had been scheduled for today.

Negotiations stalled when wage offers were tabled late in 2017. The main stumbling-block with the Port de Québec wage offer concerns the consideration of seniority in the awarding of salary levels under the new compensation structure.

We must not forget that the right to collective bargaining is protected in Canada. The Union is currently reviewing all its options for enforcing this basic right.

About UCTE and PSAC

UCTE is a component of PSAC representing transportation employees, primarily at airports and canals. It represents the approximately 20 employees at the Port de Québec who work in finance, civil engineering and the Harbour Master’s office. Their collective agreement expired on September 30, 2017.

PSAC represents more than 180,000 members across Canada. PSAC-Quebec is affiliated with the FTQ and has more than 40,000 members in the federal public, Quebec university and private sectors
