Guy-Favreau Child Care Centre Saved At Last!

Montréal, January 10, 2018 – The Public Service Alliance of Canada, Quebec region (PSAC-Quebec), is proud to announce that an agreement has recently been reached between the administration of the CPE du Complexe Guy-Favreau located in Montréal and Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC).

"This is a major victory for our members and wonderful news for the families who use the excellent services of the CPE (child care centre). Proof once more that through mobilization we can achieve great things," noted Magali Picard, Regional Executive Vice-President of PSAC-Quebec.

After the families and the CPE administration mobilized, and with technical support from PSAC, PSPC finally agreed to make up the difference in the CPE shortfall for 2017 and 2018. The CPE accommodates almost 80 children, most of whose parents are federal public service workers.

Members will recall that the new rent cost facing the CPE was the catalyst for the financial crisis. The centre's rent skyrocketed from $0 to $200,000 in 2017 as the result of a new PSPC practice.  Despite a subsidy from Quebec, the CPE had to scramble to come up with an annunal funding base of some $80,000 to pay the rent. Notwithstanding a clear policy, PSPC refused to provide the necessary funding.

"We will continue to work with the families and the CPE administration to find a long-term funding solution. It is essential for the families that the government and PSPC abide by their policy on work place daycare centres," said Ms. Picard.

"Justin Trudeau and his government have a concrete opportunity to provide support to these middle-class families. We expect no less than a long-term commitment with the CPE," she concluded.
